CITY OF BELLS: an adaptation of Allen Ginsberg's Poetry
Directed and Script by Rachel Bowditch

Presented at HERE Performance Art Cafe,
March 2000

City of Bells is a three-dimensional exploration of the poetry of Allen Ginsberg. Through theater, poetry, dance, music, art and magic, we are tried to capture this essence, weaving a collage of “images juxtaposed”. This piece is aiming at reality in a theatrical way, shedding a new light onto a world we tend to label as dark. “ A yellow paper rose twisted on a wire hanger in the closet and even that imaginary, nothing but a little bit of hallucination.”

“ Difficulties are not mastered by keeping silent about them.“ Brecht.

MASTABA
Directed by Rachel Bowditch
Poetic Text by Tracey Raven Dawn

Mastaba is a haunting portrait of two women whose fates are intertwined, inseparable. Like angels, serene and beautiful, they discover one another and a diary full of secrets. Transfixed, they move as one. Working with poetry, dance, mask, photographic landscapes, video and music, our aim is to explore the delicate and fragile balance between life and death. This piece is inspired by Anne Sexton’s poem “Live”.

A WOMAN’S PLACE
Directed by Rachel Bowditch
Script by Susan Riskin
Presented at HERE Performance Art Cafe,
April 2001

Throughout the centuries, women like Margaret Sanger have fought for basic rights, like birth control and the right to choose. A Woman’s Place is a theatrical documentary that explores the voices of men and women who have made a difference and celebrates these battles and struggles that have helped define what a woman’s place is today. The text of A Woman’s Place is taken directly from letters, diaries, speeches, interviews and writings of historical figures from Virginia Woolfe to Margaret Sanger to Florence Nightingale, whose words made a significant impact on history. These voices weave a dynamic dialogue that spans different centuries across geo-political boundaries.

Presented at the Downstairs Series, Ontological Hysteric Theatre,
August 2002

A girl named Arcana, with telepathic powers, struggles to find her place in a world filled with self-help gurus, tourists and charlatan psychiatrists. We travel with her through time and logic to a crossroads between chaos and order, where the surreal is real and reality absurd. Vessel brings this world to you through poetry and dance combined with acrobatics, masks, stilts and over the top characters, creating a mystical universe where anything is possible.

Arcana images still to come.
